About the Rat Bones Artwork:
The iconic Vato Rat design was created by renowned artist Craig Stecyk, who drew inspiration from the vibrant Santa Monica Dogtown surf-skate scene of the 1970s. Stecyk's work was heavily influenced by Hispanic gang culture and graffiti, which he incorporated into his airbrushing on Zephyr surfboards. The iconic Vato Rat graphic gained popularity as it was used to adorn surfboards and claim territory in local surf spots. In 1983, Stacy Peralta of Powell-Peralta decided to resurrect the Vato Rat in the form of "Rat Bones," using it in advertising, on decks, stickers, and T-shirts.
